They literally moved best actor to the last category over best fucking picture to capitalize on the tragic death of the frontrunner but then not only did that frontrunner NOT win it went to the one guy in the category who didn’t go to the ceremony
Wanna clarify that this post is less abt who deserved to win and more about ABC/the academy blatantly using Chadwick Boseman’s death as a ratings booster and then looking like fools when their greed blew up in their faces
Apparently Anthony Hopkins’ reps begged the academy to let him attend via zoom instead of going to one of the designated oscar gathering spots since A. He’s high risk for COVID and B. His father just passed and he wanted to be with his family and they said no??
Important to add:
As a result of the no-Zoom nonsense AND the refusal to allow Hopkins to pre-record a just-in-case acceptance speech, he was literally asleep when all this went down, on account of it being like 4AM in Wales at the time & the fact that he is in his 80s and iirc the oldest ever Best Actor Oscar Nominee/Winner
Despite all this the first thing he does is record an acceptance video to post on Instagram & the speech was basically, “I’m shocked, I’m grateful, I didn’t expect to win anything, but thank you & RIP Chadwick Boseman.”
ON TOP OF WHICH,
Soderbergh so clearly expected Chadwick to win that the Academy gift bags for all guests of the Oscars ceremony also included NFTs of Chadwick Boseman valued at something like $1.2mil (iirc guests have to pay taxes on the goodie bags… not sure how that’s gonna be negotiated).
To add insult to injury, these environment destroying digital trading cards were made by an artist who bought a $50 3D model of Boseman’s head and put a gold texture on top… and the person who sold the $50 3D rendering stole that from a separate artist they’d commissioned on Artstation, and ran off with the files without paying/possibly by doing a chargeback.
